Moustache Party (25.1mb)
My [almost] successful attempt at making a “youtube-style” video that speaks to the proletariat as opposed to film students.
I wanted the whole thing to be one take, but in the end, the close-ups help tie up the loose ends from editing the 3 different takes together, and they clarify things quite a bit.
The idea came from a video Danny did for an Upstart Films contest. I decided to remake the video, (which was just the lip-syncing) and attempted to make it “better” using confetti, bubbles, and absurdism. It probably ended up about 70% how I imagined it in my head.
As for problems, I think the lack of light gets in the way of the lip-syncing (which is supposed to be the main point of the video) quite a bit, especially in these compressed versions. I couldn’t use the brighter takes because the moustache fell off half-way through and I didn’t like the look. C’est la vie.
Here’s how it looks on Youtube: terrible as usual, but what can you do.
[There was such a good response to this when I posted this on Facebook, I’m reposting it here]
To all of my middle class and upper-middle class friends:
Good morning,
On May 2nd and 3rd a cyclone hit Burma (in Southeast Asia) and has killed 10,000+ people. The liberal media, the Disney Corporation, the Illuminati, and George Bush senior’s secret police have probably all been conspiring to cover this up because apparently no-body cares.
Another million people are said to be affected by the cyclone. Just like hurricane Katrina, this disaster is pretty epic: homes, infrastructure, and roads have all been leveled. But unlike Katrina, where the physical damage amounted to about $100 billion of dollars, there wasn’t even $100 billion worth of stuff in Myanmar to begin with.
This poses a problem! Who is going to pay to rebuild a city that had no economy in the first place?
Student Upstart Films can now be called “the award winning” Student Upstart Films. That’s right, our PSA (starring America’s Next Top Model Mike Ostrov) won FIRST place in the SIFE/MPAA contest.
Upstart gets a 50% share of the winnings ($3000) and the PSA will air on MTVu so students at student unions all around the country can watch it with the volume turned off and ignore it.
Congratulations everyone who worked on it! Congratulations Upstart Films!

It’s vindicating to learn that all those hour and a half long meetings actually materialized into something tangible.
Inuit Jargon had our final show a few weeks ago. Our carriage finally turned back into a pumpkin. Natalie Andres and Ryan Moulton helped capture the magic.

All in all, I’m glad we all had fun at the last show. As far as technical stuff, I wish there’d been more fog and strobe lights, and I hadn’t artificially set the gain up so high on my camera but whatev…
