I’m still obsessed with the fact that Broadsword Bros turned out so much worse than I thought it would. In terms of execution of the idea, or pulling off the jokes in the script, it totally failed. Visually, I still think it’s alright. Still pictures tend to make it look much more dynamic / interesting than it really is…

I think you’re being a little too hard on yourself with this one. You had a lot of factors going on: it’s huge and epic AND has a lot of special effects AND action AND comedy (The Adventures of Pluto Nash might still be the most expensive “comedy” ever made if Evan Almighty hasn’t beaten it)… AND it’s a trailer. I admire Broadsword Bros for its ambition. And that it allows me to hold a gun… one of my new favorite things to do in movies.
Was it your first time working with green screen so much? I’m sure you learned a thing or two from it for next time. You could try remaking it, assuming that notion doesn’t give you a headache.
If you’ll allow me to be frank, the biggest failure is the costumes, I’d say. Maybe cheap fabric would have worked better than garbage bags and street clothes. Who knows.
If anything, you can make Andrew Tan a scapegoat.
PS: Why no gun flares (or whatever you call that)? I imagine it would be tough to animate AND synch with the video.
What I learned about green screening is that I never want to do it again, hah.
Gunshots were a nightmare for two reasons. When you add a gunshot, you need to
1. Sync up the sound to the movement
2. Add the gun shot fire that comes out of the gun
3. The flare of light that comes from the gunshot.
It was the plan to add at least the sounds when it was totally finished, but then my computer couldn’t even render anymore. It probably would’ve taken another week to add all of that, and I’d all but given up on it by then since it was already a month over schedule and I wasn’t pumped for how it was turning out.
Yeah, the garbage bag costumes were a bit of a letdown. I was actually really close to borrowing a bunch of stuff in the prop room at Constans until that fell through at the last second. Asia still looked really good IMO though.
I was planning on doing a pretty big technical writeup on BB sooner or later as an exercise and posting it.
Did I tell you that I wanted to do a reimagination of Broadsword Bros without green screen and with a real plot?
I know I mentioned it the other day, but I just wanted to say again: I think it would be hilarious if you completely retooled Broadsword Bros (like the second episode of a tv show after the pilot tested poorly).
BROADSWORD BROS: THE SERIES
The Bros work, live, and hang out in a magical bar with a dragon as bartender. Bro 2 talks a lot about his failing relationship with Asia’s character. Bro 1 is having trouble getting his GED and struggles with his past of juvenile delinquency. Bros 3 and 4 are obsessed with building a time machine. The name of the bar is “Dark Alchemy”.
Cliffhanger: bro 2 gets Asia’s character pregnant & bro 1 gets suspended from magical GED night school. Dragon bartender is voiced by Gilbert Gottfried.
Resolution: Bros 3 & 4 go back to the past and burn down the magical GED night school before convincing Asia’s character to make better decisions. Dragon bartender isn’t as annoying as you’d suspect.
But hey, it’s your project.
Yeah, the costumes for Asia and Brian were good.
Ah, the flash of light from the gunshot… I never thought of that one. I guess that’s why we used a camera flash for Raf Gaitan’s Stereotype-O-Rama: The Drug Years.
Hah, I totally want to see a reimagining of Broadsword Bros. I totally want to BE in a reimagining of Broadsword Bros.
