So you can find my new design-only portfolio at itISobvious.com which (if you’re paying attention) is a play off of this site’s name (isITobvious.com). I thought it was cute.

There isn’t all that much there. A portfolio is only as good as the worst piece, so I decided to only include the better ones or ones that I’m not bound by an NDA not to release.

Enjoy!

Until I did my bi-yearly hard drive purge, I’d forgotten that in 2006, I was obsessed with learning 3D animation. “Learning” is the wrong word. I didn’t intend to “learn” 3D animation in any systematic way, I just happened to download a bunch of 30 day trials and decided that this would be what I was into for the next 30 days.

As you might assume, looking at how things have turned out by the beginning of of 2010, I never quite got beyond the “30 day trial” skill level using any of these programs. There was too much patience involved.

In addition to over a month of wasted time, I also got a hard drive full of animation tests (render tests, camera movement tests, lighting tests, texture tests) that I can show for myself. All-in-all, they’re mostly inept, glitchy and artless, but there are a few that more interesting than others. These are those:

Tried to do something realistic. It took a whole lot of work for what it ended up looking like.

Upon reflecting, I guess the big question is, what’s the point of all of this? I think the answer is that there is no point.

If you find a better way to spend 30 days in 2010, let me know and I’ll do that instead.

I’m doing an experiment. I’ve decided to test out Amazon.com’s DTP system out by selling one of my short stories.

They won’t let me just give it away (the cheapest Amazon’s system allows is $0.99), but since I plan on making no sales, I also don’t plan on making any money. I’m not asking you to buy anything. In fact, please don’t buy it. Save your cash for when the revolution comes.

Even if I did have hopes of tricking some stranger into buying it, Amazon also takes a 70% cut on all downloads, which would leave me with 30 cents (without tax). The purpose of this is really just to see how the system works from start to finish.

So that’s where you come in. I’ve reprinted the story below and in the easier to read PDF format, for free.

If you get bored and decide to read it and you enjoy it, take a minute or two to about it write a glowing review on Amazon It should be full of ridiculous, outlandish praise that couldn’t possibly be real. I’d like to fill the Amazon page with bizarre claims about how good this story is. The sillier the better. I posted a sample of what a “good” review should look like on the Amazon page, but feel free to go wild with it. In fact, review it if you want even if you haven’t read the story. It might make writing the review more fun.

If you don’t like the story, feel free to stop yourself from writing a negative review.

I enjoyed writing it, so I hope people enjoy reading it. Without further ado, reprinted in all of it’s glory is the short story A Firework Over Lake Michigan along with some boss cover art that I threw together. Click Read More, to check it out…

Skittles
(written July 19th)

Apartment moves are traumatic. I realized that about five minutes ago as I dug through a recycling bin to find something I’d lost. It was a red plastic heart that had been filled with Skittles at one point — one of many things Nora sent me last Valentines Day.

She paid over $20 to Express mail it to me so it would arrive on time for Valentines. I’d kept the box it was mailed in for the last 5 months because it was filled with some nice memories. Yesterday, I filled it with year-old notebooks and binders and brought it across town to my new apartment.

Priorities

Moves are defined by what you decide to take with you and what you throw away. Sometimes you don’t even know what’s important to you until you’re facedown inside of a blue City of San Diego recycling can.

The day before the move, my roommate asked me if the empty red Skittles container that’d been hidden in the cabinet since February was trash. I said yes. The day of the move, I was ripping open garbage bags in the July heat trying to find it.

When I moved out after college, I threw away twenty acceptance letters I got from law schools. I kept the acceptance letter I got from USC’s screenwriting program. I gave away my speakers and stereo receiver but kept the broken radio that my mom got for me for Christmas. I sold my television, but I kept a green plastic innertube:

“You got in! I know you’ll stay afloat in law school -Nora” was written on the side in black magic marker.

Goodbye

Saying goodbye to people is more difficult than saying goodbye to things. My video camera didn’t cry when I sold it the day before I moved from Gainesville. Nora did.

I’ve never cried about a move probably because I never really knew what “goodbye” meant growing up. Except for moving from New York to Florida before I was old enough to care, I’ve stayed in the same house, with the same two parents, and the same one brother for my entire life. We never even changed the living room furniture.

The first time I learned what goodbye really meant was the day I drove with my mom and dad from Orlando to Gainesville to drop my brother off for his first week of college. We drove there with him; I told him, “see you later,” and I didn’t think anything of it.

When we drove back without him, my mom knew there was no, “see you later” for her; she said goodbye to a chapter of her life that was over and was never coming back. As soon as we pulled out of the loading zone, she cried long enough for me to realize what moving and growing up was really all about.

A piece of plastic

That might be why I jumped inside of a garbage can for a piece of plastic.

It didn’t take more than a minute to find the Skittles heart. And now, in this new apartment, it’s on the kitchen counter hiding somewhere behind the dish towels. You probably wouldn’t even see it if you weren’t looking for it. Most times, I forget that it’s even there.

But it doesn’t matter whether I see it every day; what matters is that I know it’s there, and it’s not going anywhere — at least until the next move.

You can walk away from a lot of things in your life, but don’t lose your heart.

“Hello
Hello
Calling a Carl Prejektorinski to the front of the catherdral.
You have won, dear sir
may i congratulate you first?
Oh what an honor.
Human, human of the year, you are.
Human, human of the year, you are.

Why are you so scared?
You stand there shaking in the pew.
The icons are whispering to you,
they’re just old men,
like on the benches in the park,
except their balding spots are glistening with gold.
Human, human of the year, you are.
Human, human of the year, you are.

Ahh ah ah.
You have won.

Hallelujah.
Hallelujah.
Hallelujah.
Hallelujah.

Outside the cars are beeping out a song just in your honor.
And although they do not know it,
all mankind are now your brothers.
And thus the cathedral had spoken, wishing well to all the sinners.
And with a sigh grew silent.
Until next year’s big human winner.
Outside the cars are beeping out a song just in your honor.
And although they do not know it all mankind are now your brothers.
All mankind are now your brothers.
